Salam! Here’s what is what you need to know about Bintan. It’s slower, quieter, and resort-heavy. I spent 3 days there. Got rained out twice. Still had a decent good time. Here’s everything you actually need to know.

Getting There

The only way to get to Bintan from Singapore is by ferry. No bridge, no flights.

Depart from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, not HarbourFront. HarbourFront goes to Batam. Don’t mix them up.

The main operator is Bintan Resort Ferries (BRF). One-way economy fares start around S$53. Return economy trips run S$92 on regular dates and around S$102 on peak dates. I paid S$110 return on a weekend trip.

Two things worth knowing before you go:

Book your ferry before planning your itinerary. Your departure time controls how much usable time you actually have on Day 1 and Day 3.

Budget time for immigration. Bintan is 1 hour behind Singapore. My ferry left at 12:10pm and technically arrived at 12:20pm. But the Indonesian immigration queue took me over an hour to clear. Factor that into your first day.

Where to Stay

I stayed at De Bintan Villa. It was very spacious, great for groups, and far more room than a standard hotel.

There are two main areas to consider when choosing accommodation.

Lagoi and the Bintan Resorts area is the resort belt. Beaches, restaurants, spas and most tourist activities are within reach. It’s the easiest base for a first trip.

Villas are better value if you’re travelling with friends or family and want more space. Just check the map carefully first. Bintan is bigger than it looks and staying far from your activities will eat into your day.

Honest tip: plan your activities first, then choose where to stay. Not the other way around.

My 3-Day Bintan Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive and Firefly Tour

We arrived mid-afternoon and kept things low-key. Smart move after a travel day.

That evening we went on a firefly tour through the mangroves. You take a small boat out after dark, move quietly through the trees, and then the lights start appearing. Tiny, scattered, everywhere. It’s genuinely beautiful and easy enough to do when you’re still in travel mode.

Day 2: Bintan Neemo

This was the highlight of the whole trip.

Bintan Neemo (bintanneemo.com) is a floating kelong off the east coast where you can snorkel, kayak and fish. We saw clownfish around the anemones, actual Nemo fish, if you need the visual. We also kayaked out toward a nearby island, which felt like a proper adventure rather than just paddling in circles.

Fresh seafood is available and you can ask the staff to cook a meal for a price. There are also free instant noodles if you want to keep it simple. Out on the water, those were somehow the best instant noodles I have ever eaten.

One important note: Bintan Neemo is on the Trikora side of the island, on the east coast. If you’re staying in Lagoi, plan ahead for the drive.

Day 3: Mangrove Tour and Blue Lake

Morning was the mangrove tour by boat. The mangrove and firefly tours run from the same location. One at night, one during the day. During the day you get to explore further into the mangroves. At night it’s restricted for safety reasons, and rightly so. There are snakes and crocodiles in there.

Then it rained again.

But we still made it to the Blue Lake, and it was worth every wet minute.

What most people don’t know: the Blue Lake is a former bauxite mining site. When mining stopped, the water slowly turned that striking, almost unnatural shade of blue. It sits in Busung Village, about 40 minutes from the Lagoi resort area, surrounded by sandy terrain. It looks completely surreal for a tropical island.

Other Activities Worth Adding

Golf: Bintan has several courses near the resort areas. A good option if your group has mixed interests and not everyone wants to snorkel.

Water sports: Available around the resort belt. Book these early in your trip rather than saving them for the last day. If the weather cancels it, you want a backup day to try again.

Getting Around Bintan

This is the thing that catches people off guard every time.

Bintan is not a small island. Lagoi and Trikora are not neighbours. The Blue Lake is another drive from both of them. Activities are spread across the whole island.

Don’t plan your days by time. Plan geographically. Drop all your activities and accommodation into Google Maps before you book anything. Group what’s physically close together. It will save you hours and a lot of frustration.

Is Bintan Worth It?

That depends entirely on what you want from a trip.

I’ll be honest. I got a bit restless. I like waking up and doing things: hiking, exploring, stumbling across something random. Bintan isn’t that kind of destination.

But if you want beaches, nature, seafood, water activities and a real reset from city life, Bintan delivers. The convenience from Singapore is genuinely hard to beat. Just a ferry, and a couple of hours later you’re somewhere that feels completely different.
